Today we have the pleasure to have this incredible artist on Goathead

GH: What inspired you to start writing music?

Pranatricks: I’m not sure really. Ever since I was really young, I remember waking up with a melody in my head. Something I had heard the day before, but there was always music playing in my mind. I sang in choir as a child and I remember using a hockey stick as an air guitar in my bedroom at the age of 13 or so. For hours, I would pretend that I was playing a Metallica song (Kurt Hammett solo’s are the best!), my mom finally got me a guitar. I never took any lessons but just really loved the texture and sound of the instruments. It grew until I started learning how to track songs etc, eventually buying Pro Tools and fumbling through different softwares, working with a producer and recording anything and everything. It’s all learning, and there is still so much to learn. I just love it really.

GH: Can you tell us more about your experience performing live at gigs and what was the most memorable experience you had?

Pranatricks: I was in a couple of bands in high school and college, but nothing serious. I really started playing out in 2004 performing at a local music night and doing some open mics. You fall on your face so much in those first years of playing that eventually you either give up or really dig in. I chose the latter. I don’t really have one particular instance or set that was really memorable; every time I play I just get the overwhelming sensation of wow, how am I doing this right now? It’s a lot of fun.

GH: How is your process of songwriting set around?

Pranatricks: When the songs come, usually during a jam or rehearsal, I just make sure that I honor them. If there is a chord progression or melody that shows up, I make sure to record it on my Voice Memos or on my laptop, something to capture it. Usually when the songs arrive, they are fairly defined ideas within an hour or so. I might sit on the tune for a bit, add some parts and then write some lyrics to it. Each one is always such a magnificent adventure, like a gift that you receive and want to check out more and more, play with it and then share it. I have no idea how they came to me, but I try to honor it to the best of my ability.

GH: What motivates you to create music and bring awareness to different situations through your songs?

Pranatricks: Well, there is so much more beyond our physical existence. This lifetime is so impermanent, fleeting and short. We are all part of something bigger than ourselves. My music is an attempt to connect further to that infinite space.

GH: Could you share some insights into your next projects?

Pranatricks: Sure, I’ll be releasing my second album ‘Elements of’ in April of 2024. I have a few more singles to drop before then. The forthcoming album is a significant departure from the indie acoustic, folk qualities of my first album (Cherished), venturing more into the psych and alternative genres to express darker ‘Elements of’ my self-reflection. Similarly, many of the songs were penned years ago in periods of deep self-reflection, ultimately expressing what is Truth for me. I hope to inspire that same sort of personal inquisition for the listener.
