GH: EIVOL, what inspired you to start writing music?

EIVOL: I was born to a family of musicians and music lovers. From a young age, the melodies and rhythms of various genres surrounded me, creating an environment that nurtured my passion for music. I've always felt a deep connection to the world of musical expression, and it was as if the desire to create my own melodies was woven into the very fabric of my being. I distinctly remember a pivotal moment when I knew that music creation was my calling: listening to live music recordings and feeling the fans cheering the artists gave me chills and goosebumps. That made me realise that I was born to make music.

One of the earliest sparks of inspiration came when I heard Avril Lavigne's debut album, "Let Go." I remember that, as an adolescent, I was trying to fit in a society with a very different dialogue around femininity, where women had to wear heels, dress with skinny clothes and behave like a "girl". I never connected with that stereotype of femininity and couldn't find inspiration in any of the celebrities back then, until I saw the first time Avril Lavigne in her debut single "Complicated". I got the album and listened to it on loop: The raw authenticity of her lyrics and the way her music resonated with the emotions of countless listeners struck a chord with me. Her songs made me feel understood, and I yearned to evoke the same emotions in others through my own music. I grew up and found myself drawn to the rebellious energy of punk rock, eagerly picking up an instrument and immersing myself in the chaotic and passionate world of punk bands. Yet, even as I embraced the punk scene, my musical curiosity led me down different paths. I found myself irresistibly drawn to genres as varied as vintage soul, reggae, funk, and jazz. As life's chapters unfolded, my early twenties brought unexpected turns. While pursuing higher education, I was blessed with the surprise of becoming a parent to my first daughter. The responsibilities of motherhood naturally shifted my priorities, carving out a smaller window of time for my musical pursuits. While the spotlight on playing in bands dimmed temporarily, the fire within me never wavered; it only grew stronger with each passing day. Upon completing my university journey, I felt an urgent need to reclaim the stages that had once been my second home. The hiatus had only heightened my hunger for musical expression, and I knew I couldn't ignore the call any longer. The desire to immerse myself in the magic of music-making and live performances consumed me. And so, my return to the world of music began in earnest. The stage lights once again illuminated my path as I found myself drawn to vintage soul and funk bands. Then, I saw the Amy Winehouse documentary "Amy". I was never a big fan of her, probably because I had a misconception of her and thought she was just an interpreter with an alternative look, a product. But I remember I was shocked by that documentary: the quality of her music, her outstanding songwriting skills, her soulful and unique voice, her ability to convey a range of emotions through her music... She ignited my passion for writing my own music again. So, after a few years, with some unexpected twists and turns, such as a pandemic, the responsibilities of motherhood with two kids now and other affairs, I decided to start releasing all the music that I've written along, hoping to connect with my audience as I did and constantly do with my idols.

GH: Can you tell us more about your experience performing live at gigs, and could you share your most memorable experience?

EIVOL: My journey through music has taken me to various little venues over the years, performing with different bands spanning various genres. While I don't have a specific standout moment to label as my most memorable experience just yet, I'm certain that one of the most unforgettable moments I'll ever encounter is on the horizon.

The thought of sharing my own songs and having the audience sing along is a dream that fuels my passion. So, while I cherish the diverse experiences I've had on stage so far, I know that the most impactful and cherished memory is yet to come. The prospect of creating a shared musical journey with an audience, where my songs become anthems that unite us, is a thrill that keeps me driven and excited about the future of my musical endeavors.

GH: How is your process of songwriting set around?

EIVOL: Well, it depends on the song. Sometimes I'm playing the guitar or the piano and a chord progression that I like just pops up and then I build the structure of the song, create the voice line and the lyrics. Sometimes I just have a melody in my head, I record a voice note and then I pick the piano, get the key and start adding the chord progressions in the background depending on the voicing and/or the genre. I don't have a process that I follow thoroughly every time, it just depends on the song and the moment.

The only constant that I hold onto is my unwavering dedication to honing my skills and expanding my knowledge. I've dedicated countless hours to delving into the intricacies of music theory, harmonization, and the art of singing. Each time I dive into these subjects, I find myself humbled by the vastness of the musical universe and the depths of understanding that await me. The paradox of studying music is that the more I learn, the more I come to realize how much there is left to explore, the more I delve into these fields, the more I recognize that my journey is one of perpetual learning. This commitment to lifelong learning is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of music itself and the boundless opportunities it offers for self-discovery and artistic expression.

GH: What motivates you to create music and bring awareness to different situations through your songs?

EIVOL: What truly fuels my passion for creating music and using it to shed light on various situations is the profound connection that it fosters between me and the listeners. One of the most gratifying experiences I've had is when someone approaches me after hearing one of my songs and shares that they resonated with the emotions conveyed or found echoes of their own experiences within the lyrics.

To know that my music has the power to touch hearts and evoke feelings that are shared across different walks of life is incredibly rewarding. When someone tells me that a song I've written captures a moment they've experienced or reminds them of a person dear to them, it's a testament to the universality of emotions and the human experience. It reinforces the idea that through music, we can bridge gaps, create empathy, and foster a sense of unity that transcends our individual stories.

Ultimately, the magic lies in the connection that music creates between me as the creator and the listeners as the interpreters. This shared emotional journey underscores the potency of storytelling through song and highlights the transformative impact that art can have on people's lives. The ability to touch someone's heart and evoke a sense of relatability is what motivates me to continue crafting melodies that resonate and bring awareness to different situations that deserve our attention.
