An intimate conversation on instinct, chaos, and translating emotion into sound.

Today we have the pleasure to have MJ on Goathead
GH: What inspired you to start writing music?
MJ: I’ve been drawn to music for as long as I can remember. Around 8 or 9, I started creating songs, first by making up melodies and memorizing them, then writing them down once there were too many to hold in my head. I never really chose songwriting. It chose me.

GH: Can you tell us about your experience performing live and a memorable moment?
MJ: I started performing at 13 in a grunge band. By our third or fourth gig, something clicked. The crowd’s energy, the confidence from being prepared, the joy of playing, it flipped a switch. Live performance became the feeling I wanted to chase forever. It’s an out-of-body, fully surrendered state.

GH: What is your songwriting process like?
MJ: Chaotic but instinctive.
Sometimes I jot lyrics throughout the day or wake up mid-sleep with melodies from dreams.
Other times I freestyle-sing for hours and transcribe later. And collaboration, putting great musicians in a room and letting ideas bounce naturally.
GH: What motivates you to create and explore different themes?
MJ: Everything. Music is how I process life. Art transforms tension, pain, and confusion into something meaningful, sometimes even euphoric. I’ve written about heartbreak, love, war, climate, nostalgia, contradiction, melancholy, even the mundane. I feel more like a translator of a frequency than a creator from scratch.
GH: Can you share insights into your next projects?
MJ: I’m releasing a new song this Friday, February 27th, titled “Strange (Figure).”
It’s a dark, atmospheric pop track exploring themes of reincarnation, lifelines, and what may exist beyond this plane. Like all my music, it’s open to interpretation.
This year, I’m releasing music monthly. Expect electric pop, synth pop, raw indie, jazz-influenced, alternative, experimental, and anti-pop records. And at the end of the year, a surprise.
