From Whistling Tunes to the Stage: Ultan JP Opens Up About His Songwriting Journey

Discover the spark behind Ultan JP's music, his unique songwriting process, and what’s next on the horizon as he prepares to hit the stage

Today we have the pleasure to have Ultan JP on Goeathead.

GHR: Hi Ultan, great to have you here! What first inspired you to start writing songs?

Ultan JP: I’ve always been intrigued by the mystery of what makes a good song. I remember telling my younger brother when we were kids in elementary school that I had written a song featured on a pop program on TV way back when. So it must always have been in me.

GHR: Have you ever performed live or played in a cover band?

Ultan JP: I’ve never played in a cover band or performed live in the past. Performance is a new direction for me.

GHR: What does your songwriting process look like?

Ultan JP: I could be in the middle of anything or anywhere, and suddenly I will get a little moment of inspiration. A melody, a little hook idea, or a guitar riff will spark up in my mind. I’m always whistling little tunes into my voice recorder on my phone. Then, when I get a chance, I sit down and knead different ideas together. I’ve literally thousands of takes on my phone. The vast majority I’ll never use, but there’s always a few I can work with.

GHR: What drives you to keep writing music?

Ultan JP: I’m not sure why I’m motivated in that way. Human nature is a strange thing. I think I would go mad if I couldn’t write prose, poetry, or songs. It’s something innate. I’m interested in the essence of things and what the real dynamic is behind what drives stuff forward. I like to look under the bonnet.

GHR: What’s next for you?

Ultan JP: In the next few weeks, I will be adding more songs with accompanying vids to my YouTube channel. I would like to get gigging with my set this year. So I want every badass mofo out there to travel to Dublin to see me. What’s stopping you??
