A rising voice with a message, Mark Walsh talks vulnerability, growth, and why his scars matter.

Today we have the pleasure to have Mark Walsh here on Goathead.
GHR: What inspired you to start writing music?
Mark: When I was a kid, I played guitar for years before I started writing my own songs. I sang alone in my room for about a year or two before letting anyone hear me—I was a shy kid. I didn’t speak up much until I started singing. Over time, songwriting became more than just creative expression. It became a lifeline.
GHR: Can you tell us more about your experience performing live? Any standout memories?

Mark: I’ve been performing since I was young—Hard Rock Cafe Boston, Berklee
Performance Center, Southie Boys & Girls Club. But the real turning point was in 2023, at a boat concert with my best friend Phat Hosea. People singing “Time Zone” back at us… I knew I’d never take that for granted. My favorite show so far was January 2024 at the Sonia in Cambridge. Phat and I are still performing together. It’s something I’ll never stop being grateful for.
GHR: What’s your songwriting process like?
Mark: It usually starts with me and my guitar or some loop that sparks something. I don’t like forcing it—if it’s not coming naturally, it probably isn’t worth keeping. Doechii said something that stuck with me: “I create what wants to be created regardless of results.” That’s how I’m trying to approach things now. Everything I write is real. It’s all rooted in my life.

GHR: What drives you to create music that brings awareness or shares personal stories?
Mark: My songs are based on what I’ve lived through. I hope people feel seen in them. “Scars” is about my low points, but it’s also meant to be inspiring. We all carry scars—it’s part of our story. One lyric says, “You didn’t come this far to come this far.” I think more people need to hear that. I want to make music that gives others the courage to speak when they feel they can’t.

GHR: Any insight into what’s coming next?
Mark: I’m dropping a new single every month. My newest one, “Talk,” is out now and it’s my most personal yet. “Scars” leads into a more vulnerable chapter for me. I’m also working on a full-length album with Phat Hosea—my first. He was the one who pushed me to sing in the first place. That project means the world to both of us, and I can’t wait to share it.
